  1. It's great to have copies of ancestors' signatures. If I cannot find a photo of the person, I make a special effort to find a sample of his/her handwriting. I've found signatures in probate files (in wills and in affidavits of executors and beneficiaries), land selection files, parish registers, original marriage certificates, Supreme Court equity files, and lots of other sources.
